Hello Team and Soccer Families,

It’s Coach Mick here. Today we’re going to discuss an incredibly important topic that’s as much about performance as it is about overall health: pre-game nutrition. Let’s learn how to fuel our bodies the right way before stepping onto the pitch.

Carbohydrates are Key

Before a game, the goal is to make sure our young athletes have enough energy to perform at their best. That’s where carbohydrates come in. They are the body’s main source of energy. Good sources of carbs include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Adding Some Protein

Including some protein can be beneficial as it can help with muscle repair and recovery. But remember, the pre-game meal is not the time to load up on too much protein. Good sources are lean meats, fish, eggs, or plant-based options like beans or tofu.

Hydration Matters

Making sure to stay hydrated before a game is crucial. Water should be the main source of hydration, but drinks containing electrolytes can also be useful, especially during hotter weather.

Timing

Aim to have a substantial meal 3-4 hours before kickoff, to give your body time to digest the food. If the game is early in the morning, have a lighter meal or snack 1-2 hours before.

Every Athlete is Unique

It’s important to remember that everyone is unique. What works for one person might not work for another. Encourage your young athletes to listen to their bodies and find what works best for them.

At the end of the day, soccer is about having fun, and good nutrition is about more than just improving performance on the pitch. It’s about teaching our young players about the importance of a balanced diet and helping them establish healthy habits for life.

Eat well, play well,

Hey there Team and Soccer Families!

Coach Mick here, wishing you all a fun-filled and sunny summer break! While it’s important to rest and recharge, summer can also be a great time to hone your soccer skills in a relaxed, enjoyable way. So, what can you do over the summer to improve your soccer abilities? Here are a few ideas:

Beach Soccer

Heading to the beach? Fantastic! Beach soccer not only helps improve your ball control due to the uneven and shifting sand surface, but it also strengthens your leg muscles. Plus, it’s a whole lot of fun!

Biking

A bike ride is a fantastic way to enhance your cardiovascular fitness, which is crucial for those long soccer matches. It helps improve stamina and leg strength, all while enjoying the beautiful summer weather.

Swimming

Swimming is an excellent total body workout and a fun way to cool off in the summer heat. It improves your endurance and flexibility, both essential for soccer.

Outdoor Games

Games like frisbee, tag, or capture the flag can improve your agility, speed, and coordination. They’re also great for fostering team spirit and communication skills.

Juggling the Ball

Got a spare few minutes? Practice juggling the soccer ball. It’s a brilliant way to work on your ball control and coordination. Start simple and try to beat your record each day!

Hiking

Hiking is great for building leg strength and stamina. It’s also a fantastic way to enjoy nature and get some fresh air.

Yoga or Pilates

These activities can help improve your flexibility and balance, which can enhance your soccer skills. There are plenty of online classes suitable for all ages and levels.

Healthy Eating

Finally, remember to fuel your body with healthy foods over the summer. Plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins will keep your body in top shape.

Remember, the aim of these activities is not just about improving your soccer skills but also about enjoying your summer break. So, pick activities that you love and have fun!

Wishing you all a wonderful summer, filled with adventure, fun, and a little bit of soccer too!

Stay active,

Hey Team and Soccer Families,

Coach Mick here! Today, let’s talk about an important aspect of soccer – fitness. It’s crucial for our young players to develop their physical abilities in a safe and healthy manner. Here’s how we approach fitness for our players.

Age-Appropriate Training

Fitness training should always be age-appropriate. Our younger players aren’t mini adults, and their training should reflect that. Instead of intense, structured workouts, we focus on fun activities that naturally improve fitness – think games of tag, obstacle courses, or relay races.

Focus on Fundamental Movements

Before specific soccer skills, children should master fundamental movement skills, like running, jumping, throwing, and catching. These skills form the foundation for future athletic development. We incorporate these movements into our training sessions in a fun and engaging way.

Soccer-Specific Conditioning

As players get older, we introduce more soccer-specific conditioning. This might include short, high-intensity drills that mimic the demands of a soccer game. However, the majority of fitness work still comes from small-sided games and skill-based activities.

Recovery and Rest

Rest is just as important as training. Young bodies need time to recover and grow. We ensure that our training schedule includes plenty of downtime, and we encourage our players to get plenty of sleep – it’s when most growth and recovery occurs!

Healthy Habits

Finally, we promote healthy lifestyle habits. We encourage our players to eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and spend time outdoors. Soccer isn’t just about what happens on the pitch, it’s about developing healthy, happy individuals.

Remember, at this age, the primary goal is to develop a love of physical activity and soccer. The fitter our players are, the more they can enjoy the game!

Keep having fun, keep staying active,
